UNKEMPT UNCONSCIOUS

A virtual reality experience about the unconscious mind.

A self-directed, individual project developed with the purpose of providing a different perspective, provoking thought and showcasing a broad range of skills in a memorable way.

With an iterative approach and a service design perspective, I strategised, carried out research and used design thinking to create an interesting and immersive experience.

This project was an opportunity to improve and expand my skill set in the areas of creative design, concept delivery, interactivity and audio design. The result is a realistic, harmonious environment and overarching experience.

To hone practical design skills in art, programming or design toward the development of an industry standard professional digital portfolio. Students have the choice of working on a client project, a creative piece, a game, website or other interactive media project using hardware and software they’ve learnt in other classes or to broaden their skill base through working with other industry tools.

An adventurous virtual reality (VR) experience exploring concepts surrounding the unconscious mind from the perspective of a dreamer.

With an underlying story about the player character trying to come to terms with a fatal accident, the experience involves confronting common symbols of emotions present in dreams. Whilst exploring the environment, collecting pieces of a photograph and experiencing events reflective of common dream symbols, the player steps into the unconscious mind of a grieving parent trying to come to terms with their new reality.

THE PROJECT WAS SPLIT INTO TWO PARTS, AND WAS COMPLETED OVER TWO SEMESTERS.
  – Part One tackled environment design and development, and the incorporation of initial interactions (teleportation in VR & collecting photograph pieces).
  – Part Two focused on providing experiences reflective of common dream symbols.
